Day Trips to Leonardslee in Summer
In the Summer, Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens is particularly beautiful, vividly colourful and full of life. The trees and plants in full bloom, produce enormously bright displays. According to Ray Abraham, Head gardener, some of the later flowering Rhododendrons (Polar Bear) and Azaleas (Viscosum) add to the glorious environment with their very strong perfume and striking blooms which stand out boldly among the green leaves. There are many different rare Acer trees (also known as Maple trees) in Leonardslee Gardens that have unusually shaped, feathery leaves in a variety of colours and their bark is very attractive. Among the 100 different species of Oak trees found in Leonardslee Gardens, we also have a collection of 30 different Oak trees from around the world.
“The garden is a true paradise and in summer has many species of wild orchids and wildflowers apart from the amazing collection of trees, Rhododendrons, Azaleas, and Camellias.” - Ray Abraham, Head Gardener
Bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts will love visiting Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens during the summer months. If one sits still and quietly observes, a myriad of wildlife can be seen, including Stoats, Weasels, Field Mice and various types of deer with their young. There are a number of wild Wallabies in the gardens, and these can very often be seen in the area of Oak Walk.
To date, we have recorded 65 different bird species thriving in the gardens. Among the chorus of young birds, you might even spot baby owls being fed, and in some areas of the garden, a pair of Red Kites can be spotted flying overhead.
