Giant Redwoods Flourishing in the UK and Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens

Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens is home to some of the oldest and most magnificent Giant Redwood trees anywhere, at the historic 240-acre estate in West Sussex. Recent studies have shown that these towering giants, first introduced to the UK around 160 years ago, are thriving and growing in this country at a rate comparable to their native counterparts in California. 

The estate boasts nine old specimens of Giant Redwoods (Sequoiadendron giganteum), believed to be among the oldest in the UK, planted by Charles Beauclerk in the 1850s using seedlings from Kew Gardens. Sequoiadendron giganteum ‘Pendulum’, a weeping hybrid, has Champion Tree status, a County Champion for height at 15.2m. 

Leonardslee’s tallest straight species Giant Redwood was measured at 45.3m in 2019 and has been designated as Remarkable by the Tree Register of The British Iisles, TROBI. It is located in the Hillside Garden.

In addition to the old specimens, Leonardslee is home to 18 younger Giant Redwoods planted from the 1980s onward in the Deer Park Pinetum, ensuring the legacy of these awe-inspiring trees continues for generations to come. 

Gardens Wildlife 

The UK is now estimated to have around 500,000 redwoods, including Giant Redwoods, Coastal Redwoods, and Dawn Redwoods, with most believed to be Giant Redwoods. This number significantly surpasses the 80,000 mature Giant Redwoods found in their native range in California. 

While the UK's tallest Giant Redwood stands at 54.87m, compared to California's 90m giants, experts believe that the British trees have the potential to reach similar heights over their 2,000-plus year lifespan, given the favourable growing conditions found in the UK.
