EXPERIENCE THE FOUR SEASONS

SPRING COACH DAY TRIPS

Spring is one of the best times for groups to visit Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens.

From March to June this garden comes alive with a riot of colour. Some of the marvels groups can expect to see include Magnolias towering 40 feet high, Camellias in groves, footpaths winding through hills carpeted in bluebells, many hundreds of Rhododendrons and later the show of Azaleas. All these plants produce an amazing symphony of scents.

At every turn, groups will find flowers in so many different colours and shapes - all against the backdrop of new leaves beginning to bud among the trees. It is astonishing to see these colours (the Rhododendrons and Azaleas especially) reflected in the lakes.

Naturally, spring time also comes with new life, in abundance. Leonardslee is home to an extraordinary range of wildlife including foxes, rabbits, grey squirrels, badgers, weasels, stoats, shrews, voles, and our now famous wallabies. The estate is home to over 100 free roaming deer, there are three varieties: Sika, Axis and Fallow.

Green woodpeckers are often spotted, while herons enjoy the shallow lakeside water where large carp feed on the surface. Birds regularly sighted in spring include electric blue kingfishers, yellow Wagtails and even Buzzards, who have taken to nesting in one of the giant Sequoia (Redwoods) from California.

SUMMER COACH DAY TRIPS

Summer at Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens is particularly beautiful and full of life.

The trees and plants in full bloom, produce enormously bright displays. According to our Head gardener, some of the later flowering Rhododendrons (Polar Bear) and Azaleas (Viscosum) add to the glorious environment with their very strong perfume and striking blooms which stand out boldly among the green leaves. There are many different rare Acer trees (also known as Maple trees) in Leonardslee Gardens that have unusually shaped, feathery leaves in a variety of colours and their bark is very attractive. Among the 100 different species of Oak trees found in Leonardslee Gardens, we also have a collection of 30 different Oak trees from around the world.

Bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts will love visiting Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens during the summer months. If one sits still and quietly observes, a myriad of wildlife can be seen, including Stoats, Weasels, Field Mice and various types of deer with their young. There are a number of wild Wallabies in the gardens, and these can very often be seen in the area of Oak Walk.

To date, we have recorded 65 different bird species thriving in the gardens. Among the chorus of young birds, groups might even spot baby owls being fed, and in some areas of the garden, a pair of Red Kites can be spotted flying overhead.

AUTUMN COACH DAY TRIPS

As the summer draws to a close, Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens takes on a whole new guise.

In Autumn, the trees at Leonardslee create beautiful displays, their leaves turning into a myriad of colours, which create incredible reflections in the lakes around the garden. Hundreds of varieties of trees can be found throughout Leonardslee and their bark looks stunning in this season, contrasted against the backdrop of changing colours.

The autumn highlight for our Head Gardener, is the great many different types of Conifers around the garden. He says; “As the frosts of early morning come, the Conifers look brighter and give the appearance of being burnt and stand out among the deciduous trees more so.”

Throughout the autumn months of September, October and November, many of the woodland fungi have fruiting bodies visible on trees and in the leaf litter - ideal for aspiring mushroom hunters and foragers, like the chefs from our own Restaurant Interlude.

WINTER COACH DAY TRIPS

Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens becomes a winter wonderland during December, January and February.

The deciduous trees take on a majestic appearance and the garden becomes very peaceful. On dry, frosty mornings the gardens seem truly magical in the early mist - every photographer's dream. Groups will find many adventures and things to see and do at Leonardslee Gardens during the winter months.

Many unusual migrant birds come to shelter and feed on the berries at Leonardslee in the winter. And a variety of smaller birds go round the garden in small flocks.

This is a great time to identify birds as they can be clearly spotted among the bare trees and snow covered landscape.

We advise teaching staff to visit the gardens in advance. To help you plan your day, you'll receive two pre-visit planning passes, once we've received payment for your school visit.

During the preliminary teacher visit, you can use this opportunity to familiarise yourself with the gardens, view attractions, and lunch facilities and consider routes you want to take, to allow plenty of time to see as much as possible within your allocated timetable.

The Gardens open at 9 am. We recommend at least 3–5 hours for your visit.

We ask all educational groups to book their visit in advance. For pricing & packaging, please fill out the form below.
