Join Barry Newman Vice Chairman of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Fruit, Vegetable and Herb Committee and a former Chairman of the National Vegetable Society for three talks at Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens for his second year, where he will talk about everything you would need to know about gardening. Vegetable Growing in Raised Beds 
2 March at 10:30 – 12:00 

A talk which goes into greater detail on how to plan, choose materials and crop a raised bed for maximum production. This is useful for those interested in this popular type of growing and for those wishing to maximise production from their existing plots.

Growing in Containers 
9 March at 10:30 – 12:00 

This is a talk dealing with all aspects of growing vegetables, fruit and herbs for those with limited space. Issues dealt with include choice of container, the right growing medium, correct varieties, feeding, watering and cultural advice. Whilst majoring on edibles, this talk will benefit anyone wishing to grow a plant in a container.

Climate Change: Growing Vegetables in an Increasingly Challenging Environment 
16 March at 10:30 – 12:00 

This talk seeks to tackle the challenges of growing vegetables in a changing climate. It focuses on how we can deal with drought and heat by looking at how we use water, varietal choice and other techniques to combat the issues, along with advice on how to deal with stress for you and your crops!

About Barry Newman 

Barry is a well known grower, exhibitor, lecturer and judge. 

He is currently Vice Chairman of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Fruit, Vegetable and Herb Committee and a former Chairman of the National Vegetable Society. 

As well as being a senior NVS judge, Barry serves on the judging and lecturing panel of the RHS he is also a Britain in Bloom judge.  

Barry was formally trained in horticulture at Pershore, York and Bath. 

Much of his working life was in local authority amenity provision around the country, retiring in 2005.  

In 2022 Barry was awarded the Kew Guild Medal for distinguished service to the horticultural industry.
