Leonardslee in the RHS Spotlight

At Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens, art is part of the landscape.

Across 240 acres of Grade I listed gardens, sculptures can be found amongst ancient trees, beside the lakes and along the winding paths that lead through the estate. Rather than sitting apart from the gardens, each piece becomes part of its surroundings, creating moments of discovery as you explore.

The collection brings together more than 120 sculptures, with works from artists across Surrey Sculpture Society alongside larger pieces by internationally renowned sculptor Anton Smit. From striking contemporary forms to pieces that sit quietly within the planting, the collection adds another dimension to the experience of walking through Leonardslee.

The relationship between art and nature changes throughout the year, too. Seasonal planting, shifting light and the changing colours of the landscape create a different setting for the sculptures with every visit. A piece glimpsed amongst spring flowers can feel entirely different when surrounded by the rich colours of autumn.

RHS looks at how gardens across the country are bringing art into the landscape, creating spaces where visitors can enjoy both the gardens and the work within them. Leonardslee is included alongside other gardens where sculpture plays an important part in the visitor experience.

For those yet to explore the collection, it is another reason to take your time when visiting Leonardslee. Follow the paths, look beyond the planting and keep an eye out for the sculptures that reveal themselves along the way.
