Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens: A Blooming Legacy in West Sussex

Feature in the Guardian: 20 of the UK’s best gardens to visit

Nestled in the heart of West Sussex, Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens stands as a testament to horticultural excellence and historical significance. Recognized as one of Britain's finest gardens in an article written by Teres Machan in the Guardian on 25 May 2025, this Grade I-listed estate offers visitors a unique blend of botanical beauty, architectural charm, and a touch of the exotic.

A Historical Tapestry

Established in 1801, Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens has undergone several transformations under Penny Streeters ownership from 2017, reopening the gardens to the public in 2019. The estate's most notable period began in 1889 when Victorian plant collector Sir Edmund Loder acquired the property. Loder introduced an extensive collection of rhododendrons, azaleas, and exotic trees. His passion for hybridization led to the creation of the renowned Loderi rhododendron hybrids.

Botanical Wonders

Spanning 240 acres, the gardens are particularly famed for their vibrant displays of rhododendrons and azaleas, especially during May and June when the blooms are at their peak. The estate also boasts a picturesque rock garden and a series of lakes, creating a serene environment for visitors.

A Touch of the Exotic

Beyond its botanical attractions, Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens is home to a colony of wallabies, first introduced in 1889. These marsupials, along with other wildlife, add an unexpected and delightful dimension to the garden experience.

Artistic Endeavors

Art enthusiasts will appreciate the garden's integration of sculptures. Notably, the gardens feature sculptures by local artists from Surrey and Sussex as well as some works from South African sculptor Anton Smit, which will be leaving the gardens soon, adding a contemporary artistic flair to the historic grounds.

Visiting Leonardslee

Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens offers a rich tapestry of experiences for visitors. From its historic plant collections and unique wildlife to its artistic installations and tranquil landscapes, the estate continues to enchant all who wander its paths
