New Arrivals at Leonardslee: Meet Our Dutch Spotted Sheep!

There are some new faces coming to Leonardslee this November, and they're bringing a little extra charm to the gardens!

From November 2026 to February 2027, a flock of beautiful Dutch Spotted Sheep will be making themselves at home in our Events Field. With their distinctive black and white markings and gentle nature, they're sure to become a favourite with visitors this winter.

But these woolly newcomers have a rather important job to do!

A Little Grazing Goes a Long Way

While our sheep enjoy the fresh grass, they'll also be helping us care for the landscape in a more natural and sustainable way.

Known as conservation grazing, this traditional approach has been used for centuries to maintain healthy habitats. Rather than relying on machinery to keep the grass short, our new residents will do the work for us, naturally.

Their grazing will help manage weeds, improve soil health and encourage greater plant diversity, creating a healthier environment for wildlife across the estate.

And there's something rather lovely about seeing sheep grazing peacefully against the backdrop of the winter gardens.

Meet the Dutch Spotted Sheep

Originating in the Netherlands, Dutch Spotted Sheep are known for their striking markings, friendly temperament and love of grazing.

They're particularly well suited to smaller pastures, making the Deer Park field a wonderful place for them to spend the winter months.

Interestingly, the Deer Park field has a history of welcoming animals, having once been home to kangaroos, wallabies and other residents. Our new flock will be continuing that tradition, with a conservation role of their own.

Come and Say Hello This Winter!

Please keep dogs on leads at all times and be aware that electric fencing will be in place around the grazing area.
