Step Into the World of Champion Trees at Leonardslee

Hidden in the heart of the West Sussex countryside, Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens is home to one of the most extraordinary tree collections in the UK. Among its 240-acre woodland estate, you’ll find over 100 Champion Trees towering, ancient, and rare specimens recognised as the tallest or broadest of their kind in the county, country, or even across Britain and Ireland.

These impressive giants are more than just beautiful they’re historically and environmentally significant. Champion Trees are a vital part of our ecosystem and serve as living reminders of nature’s resilience and diversity.

What Is a Champion Tree?

A Champion Tree earns its title for being the largest of its species, measured by height or girth. The Tree Register, which tracks the UK's most notable trees, lists them based on exceptional size, rarity, and national importance. At Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens, our champions come from every corner of the globe from towering conifers of North America to ancient Asian evergreens.

“Many of the Champion Trees at Leonardslee are species threatened in their natural habitats,” explains Jamie Harris, Head Gardener. “Each one tells a story of adaptation, resilience, and the vital importance of biodiversity. Leonardslee is proud to help protect this living history for future generations.”

Some trees in the gardens date back to the 1800s, planted by the visionary Sir Edmund Loder. Today, they continue to thrive their trunks wider, their canopies taller forming an irreplaceable collection of global botanical heritage

Why Champion Trees Matter

Champion Trees are more than just giants of the garden they are guardians of biodiversity. Many of these trees are now endangered in their native landscapes due to habitat loss and climate change. By nurturing them in cultivated environments like Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens, we not only preserve their genetic legacy but also help educate and inspire future generations to protect our planet’s natural wonders
