Family Winter Adventures at Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens
Looking for family days out in Sussex this winter that mix fresh air, adventure and a bit of magic? You’ll find it all at Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens, from wallabies and woodland trails to hot chocolate, warm food and our woodland play park.
When the holidays hit and the screens start calling, bundle everyone into warm coats, grab the wellies and head to one of the best winter woodland gardens in England for a day that’s as good for grown-ups as it is for kids.
Hop Over to See the Wallabies
Leonardslee has been home to Bennett’s wallabies since the 1800s, and they’re easy to spot even on frosty mornings. These friendly creatures love basking in the winter sunshine with their thick coats, and little ones will love seeing them hop around.
Don’t miss feeding time at 12:00 daily.
Discover our Woodland Play Park
Our play park is a dream for energetic explorers. Spanning more than 2,500 square metres, it’s packed with:
A 5-metre multi-level champion tree climb
A 32.5-metre zipline for brave adventurers
Talking tubes, swings and slides
A miniature Leonardslee House for imaginative play
Built among the trees, it’s inclusive, accessible and full of surprises. The perfect reward after a brisk winter walk with kids.
Step Inside the Magical Dolls’ House Museum
For a little indoor wonder, don’t miss “Beyond the Dolls’ House”, one of Leonardslee’s most charming attractions.
This miniature Edwardian world is built to 1:12 scale, filled with tiny shops, a village school, a post office and even a grand country home. Every room is brought to life with intricate furniture, tiny books, art, toys and playful surprises... some even move!
Kids are spellbound by the detail (watch for the moving toy train and a cheeky spider scaring Granny!), while adults can’t help but marvel at the craftsmanship.
It’s one of the most unique family attractions in Sussex, perfect for those looking for a warm and whimsical moment during a winter’s day out.
Winter Walks for All Ages
Leonardslee offers some of the most scenic walks in Sussex, with two main routes perfect for families:
The Garden Walk (3.4 km): gentle paths past shimmering lakes, camellia groves and the famous Victorian Rock Garden.
The Ultimate Trail (5 km): an off-the-beaten-path adventure through the Deer Park and Top Garden for older children and active families.
Each step brings a new view from reflections across the lakes to friendly robins hopping between frosted branches.
Warm Up at the Clocktower Kitchen
After all that exploring, head to the Clocktower Kitchen for hot chocolates piled high with whipped cream, hearty soups, stone-baked pizza or a classic Sunday mash-up. Indoor seating makes it cosy even on the coldest days.
Little Extras for the Whole Family
Before heading home, pop into the Garden Shop & Plant Centre for locally made gifts, children’s books and more. It’s a great spot for last-minute Christmas gift ideas or stocking fillers.
