Rhododendron Celebration at Leonardslee

Each spring, Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens comes into its own as thousands of rhododendrons burst into flower across the estate. From early blooms in sheltered woodland valleys to the large, scented trusses of the Loderi hybrids later in the season, the Rhododendron Celebration is the best time to see the gardens at their most colourful.

Our collection is one of the most important in the UK, with over 300 species and hybrids growing across the estate, including rare varieties, champion plants and our National Plant Collection of Rhododendron Loderi

Why Rhododendrons Grow So Well at Leonardslee

Rhododendrons are well suited to Leonardslee for a simple reason: the garden provides exactly the conditions they need to flourish.

The gardens sit on naturally acidic, well-draining soil, which rhododendrons need to thrive. Combined with high rainfall, sheltered woodland valleys and a mature tree canopy that provides dappled shade, the estate offers ideal growing conditions without heavy intervention.

This allows plants to establish slowly, reach impressive size and flower reliably year after year. Which is why many of our rhododendrons are now among the largest of their kind in the country.

Sir Edmund Loder and the Origins of the Collection

Much of what visitors see today is thanks to Sir Edmund Loder, who owned the estate at the turn of the 20th century and was a passionate plantsman.

Sir Edmund collecting new species from the Himalayas and around the world. Rare rhododendrons were introduced to Leonardslee and carefully grown on in the estate’s favourable conditions.

His long‑term vision was not simply to grow unusual plants, but to build a serious collection that could be studied, improved and preserved for the future.

Rhododendron Loderi

Sir Edmund’s most significant contribution to horticulture was the creation of Rhododendron Loderi

Working alongside Lionel de Rothschild at Exbury, he bred a series of hybrids combining large flower size, strong fragrance and good garden performance. These plants are now known for their pale pink and ivory blooms, their scent and their distinctive presence in the landscape.

Many of the original hybrids were first grown and tested at Leonardslee, making the gardens the natural home of the Loderi group.

The National Plant Collection

Leonardslee is now the holder of the National Plant Collection of Rhododendron Loderi, recognised by Plant Heritage.

The collection includes 74 hybrids, of which:

  • 32 are considered under threat in cultivation

  • 17 are unique to Leonardslee

During the Rhododendron Celebration, visitors can follow a self‑guided trail through the gardens to see examples from the collection, marked by discreet plaques.

Where to See the Best Displays

Rhododendrons are planted throughout the gardens but several areas are particularly good to visit during the season:

The Dell

A sheltered woodland area where early‑flowering varieties perform well in the acidic soil.

The Rock Garden

Originally created by Pulham & Sons, this area combines stonework and planting pockets that suit rhododendrons especially well.

The Loderi Garden

Planted with many of the famous Loderi hybrids, this area is best later in the season when the larger, scented flowers appear.

The Coronation Garden

Set beside the lakes, this garden offers clear views of flowering rhododendrons reflected in the water on calm days.

Champion Plants

A number of rhododendrons at Leonardslee hold ‘Champion’ status, recognised by the Tree Register of Britain and Ireland as the tallest or largest of their type at county or national level.

These plants demonstrate what can be achieved when the right species is grown in the right conditions over many decades.

Visit during the Rhododendron Celebration

The display changes week by week as different varieties come into flower, making repeat visits worthwhile throughout spring.

Whether you are visiting for the gardens, photography or simply to enjoy the season at its best, the Rhododendron Celebration offers a clear view of why Leonardslee is regarded as one of the leading rhododendron gardens in the country.

The Rhododendron Celebration runs from April to June at Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens.
